ABOUT THE PROGRAM
HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs, through a cooperative partnership, provide long-term case management, supportive services, and permanent housing support through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH).
Eligible homeless Veterans receive VA provided case management and supportive services to maintain stability and recovery from physical and mental health, substance use, and functional concerns contributing to or resulting from homelessness.
HUD has provided "Housing Choice" Section 8 vouchers designated for HUD-VASH to PCHA to assist with their rental payments. The programs goal includes promoting maximal Veteran recovery and independence to sustain permanent housing in the community for the Veteran and their family.
This program was designed to address the needs of the most vulnerable homeless Veterans. Veterans must be VA Health Care eligible, homeless, and participate in case management services in order to obtain, and sustain, permanent independent community housing.
Veterans may be referred by any Homeless Program to see if they are suitable for an application for the HUD-VASH program.
Landlords interested in leasing their rental units to HUD-VASH Voucher participants may contact Lonnie Williams, LCSW at (727) 398-6661 ext 4518 to obtain additional information about special lease-up procedures.

A special Housing Choice (Section 8) rental assistance program that specifically helps homeless veterans and their families is now available. The program – Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) – provides permanent housing subsidies and case management, clinical and supportive services to homeless veterans with significant case management needs. The VA screens homeless veterans for program eligibility, determines that participating veterans are medically stabilized, and provides case management services to enrollees.
Because you own or manage rental property and/or are interested in supporting our veterans, we invite you to consider participating in this program.
Participating in the VASH program offers many benefits and safeguards:
- Participants enrolled in the VASH program have different levels of needs. Bay Pines VASH staff and the Pinellas County Housing Authority will work with you to match you with a tenant you’re comfortable with.
- You can help keep up your occupancy rate by participating in this program, particularly at a time when rental vacancies are expected to increase. Additionally, you can be assured that rent will be paid in a timely manner and that you have a stable income stream.
- Your participation is an investment in ending homelessness in Pinellas County.
